Guest Lecture Prof. Dr. Sven Diederichs (DKFZ Heidelberg & University Freiburg)

Montag, September 6, 2021; 16:00 - 17:30

We would like to invite you to attend the guest lecture given by Prof. Dr. Sven Diederichs (DKFZ Heidelberg & University Freiburg) entitled:

FROM NON-CODING RNA TO NON-CANONICAL MUTATIONS IN CANCER

Prof. Diederichs is an internationally recognized expert and well-known for his ground-breaking work on the role of non-coding RNAs, both microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs, in the context of cancer. The Diederichs lab discovered numerous ncRNAs controlling several hallmarks of cancer including cell viability, proliferation, migration and nucleotide metabolism (Oncogene 2003; Cancer Res. 2013; Nucleic Acids Res. 2017; Hepatology 2018; Nat Commun. 2020).

In addition, Prof. Diederichs and his team investigated RNA-Protein complexes and proposed the concept of RNA Dependence and the affiliated method as R-DeeP (Mol Cell 2019; Nat Protoc. 2020).

More recently, the Diederichs Lab began to study and characterize “non-canonical mutations” including nonstop extension mutations which led to the discovery of a novel degron responsible for the proteasomal degradation of a mutated version of SMAD4 that is found in pancreatic and colon cancers (Nat Cell Biol. 2020). Furthermore, Prof. Diederichs identified relevant functions for synonymous mutations in the oncogene KRAS affecting its expression and mRNA secondary structure (Nat Commun. 2019).
